The transdermal delivery system (TDDS) is an attractive and opportunistic route for drug development. Dermal applications have been associated with increased patient compliance and stable, prolonged, drug serum levels. However, not all active pharmaceuticals (APIs) are viable candidates due to their physicochemical properties. Many attempts have been made, some successfully, to circumvent the restrictions imposed by the skin’s barrier function. A recent and promising method is the ionic liquid (IL) strategy, which allows for tunable design of an API’s physicochemical properties. Albuterol and montelukast are important and well-studied asthma drugs that are not well suited for a TDDS. Here we aim to demonstrate the viability for an in vitro transdermal application of liquid state asthma drugs by using a system consisting of a static Franz diffusion cell with the receptor fluid being a phosphate buffer saline medium of pH = 7.4.
