An unprecedented azatricyclic scaffold is accessible from the bench stable iron complex tricarbonyl(tropone)iron. The synthesis of the azatricycle entails (1) aza-Michael addition of allylamine to the iron complex, (2) oxidative removal of the iron tricarbonyl group, and (3) a spontaneous intramolecular Diels-Alder reaction. The resulting azatricycle contains a number of functional handles allowing for further structural diversification including, but not limited to, indole synthesis, reductive amination, and reactions of the cyclic olefin.
