Recent years have seen renewed interest in organo-f-element complexes for their unique magnetic properties relevant to next-generation quantum information technologies. In particular, bimetallic complexes are of interest due to the ability to tune the magnetic interaction between the metal centers using e.g. reduction to the mixed-valent system. One such system, biuranocenylene (bis(dicyclooctatetraenyl)diuranium), was first reported over 40 years ago, yet to date the electronic structure of this molecule and its reduction product have not been studied. Using SQUID magnetometry and a variety of spectroscopic techniques, we have investigated the nature of the metal-metal interaction in biuranocenylene and some related molecules.
