Historically, the chemistry classroom has lacked diverse exampmles of scientists with non-majority identities. Moreover, course content often focuses on what has been traditionally valued, such as concepts and equations. Scaffolding in more diverse examples of scientists and science can be an important route to increasing diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) within the chemistry classroom. Not only will this type of course content result in increased representation of traditionally marginalized identities in science, but it can guide students to make connections between science, ethics, and the impact of science on diverse communities. In an effort to increase DEI in the context of an upper-level flipped biochemistry class, two methods are in development: including "historical moments" at the beginning of each class that introduce students to a diverse set of scientists, and homeworks that intentionally connect biochemical topics to the impact of science on historically marginalized communities.
