Bates College is a small liberal arts college with an increasingly diverse student population.  In fall 2020, 24% of the students self-identified as BIPOC while 13% were first-generation college students. Studies have shown that these cohorts of students are most likely to express interest in STEM as incoming students yet are least likely to graduate with a STEM degree. In order to address the “leaky pipeline” and encourage retention and success in STEM majors, Bates developed the STEM Scholars program, funded through an HHMI Inclusive Excellence grant. The development, implementation, and assessment of this program will be presented.
