Recent interest in two dimensional materials with layer dependent optical and mechanical properties has enabled new applications in electronics, sensing, and composites. In particular, layered transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) are appealing due to their ease of preparation, variety of available materials, and commercial availability. However, processing challenges, such as colloidal stability and solubility, have limited integration of these materials. Hybridization of TMDs with organic surface chemistries presents a solution to these challenges as processibility and solubility of inorganics species is increased from direct hybridization with organic canopies (small organic motifs to larger 2D polymers). Here, we present a robust hybridization method utilizing Carbon and Nitrogen bonding chemistries to bridge these two diverse material classes. We have developed novel methodologies to functionalize LTMD surfaces with organic linker precursors. We show that C- and N- nucleophiles can be hybridized to the basal surface of MoX<sub>x</sub> (X = S, Se, Te) allowing for post synthetic modification with polymers, COFs, and macromolecular structures. Orientation dependent properties (absorption, fluorescence, mechanical robustness) can be tuned and modulated based on surface coverage of these hybridized organic linker precursors. These results will provide the toolsets and available chemistries that allow for integration of TMDs with organic moieties for a robust and expansive engineering platform.
