The rapid increase in the atmospheric CO2 concentration has led to severe environmental issues including climate change. Fossil fuels such as coal and natural gas, significantly contribute to anthropogenic CO2 emissions, and they are likely to remain the main source of energy in the foreseeable future. Therefore, multifaceted climate change mitigation strategies are needed for our energy future. A number of nanoscale hybrid materials including a non-aqueous, liquid-like nanoparticle organic hybrid material (NOHMs) and metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), have been developed for CO2 capture and their recent advancements include their applications in direct air capture (DAC). While these materials have great promises for effective CO2 capture, their deployments in reactor systems are challenges by operating conditions that can vary significantly. Thus, this study is focused on the development of an intelligently-tailored material in combination with state-of-the art anhydrous nanofluid solvent, MOFs and electrospinning technologies to form a hybrid coaxial-fiber system for CO2 capture with selective rejection of water. The fiber-encapsulation of viscosity-controlled NOHMs and fine MOF particles in a permeable, hydrophobic, CO2 selective porous ceramic or polymer sheath can overcome the issues of NOHMs’ high viscosity and MOFs’ particle handling challenges. Further, the selective rejection of water during CO2 capture can potentially lead to a great reduction in parasitic energy consumption during pressure/temperature swing desorption. We have investigated underlying mechanisms that impact sorption kinetics, thermodynamics and mass transfer to gain an understanding that enables tuning key parameters of our encapsulated hybrid coaxial-fiber for optimal operating conditions in CO2 capture including DAC.
