The rapidly growing field of photonics is relying on lithium niobate (LiNbO<sub>3</sub>) for waveguide structures, fast optical switching, and other electro-optic applications. Transient transmission oscillations in LiNbO<sub>3</sub> were studied using a pump-probe experiment with a KM Labs Collegiate Ti:sapphire femtosecond laser kit—outputting pulses centered at 800 nm. The laser pulses induced transient phonon oscillations that were similar to those measured with a more complex pump-probe system at another university. Based on these results, both the complex and our more modest systems produced comparable data, introducing students to important experimental techniques using femtosecond laser pulses. Also, Dr. Cheryl Schnitzer will provide advice for women in science, reflecting on her three decades of experience as a chemist.
