OBJECTIVE: To describe the approach to the Rehabilitation Doctors’ management of the burned patient in the acute phase. 
METHODS: We describe the evaluation methodology, treatment indication and therapeutic plan for the acute burned patient followed by the Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Specialists of the Vall d’Hebron University Hospital’s Burn Unit (Barcelona). 
RESULTS: When approaching a burned patient, the rehabilitation doctor performs a detailed anamnesis and a directed exploration, with the aim of defining those patients who are suitable for receiving rehabilitation treatment and establishing a directed treatment plan. In the anamnesis, sociodemographic data (age, comorbidities, previous functionality, patient’s social situation) are collected and the burn is defined (data, etiology, surface, depth, possible associated factors). In the physical examination, the following variables are generally assessed: higher functions (level of consciousness, ability to collaborate), respiratory status (need for tracheal intubation, smoke inhalation…), especially sensitive areas (natural orifices, neck and hands) and joint balance (of burnt and intact limbs). Specifically, in the event of smoke inhalation or previous lung pathology, the patient is auscultated and in case of electrical burn or polytrauma, a standardized neurological examination is carried out. Rehabilitation treatment subsidiary patients are defined as those who present one of the following features: respiratory disorders, burns affecting joints or areas of special sensitivity, trunk burns in growing children, associated injuries (myopathy, neuropathy, amputation) and patients at risk ages (children and elders). The rehabilitation treatment of the burned patient in the acute phase is based on postural control, anti-edema measures, mobilizations, motor enhancement, splinting, re-education in transfers and daily living activities, standing and walking. This treatment is done two or three times a day in 30-minute sessions, according to the patient's tolerance. Functional stability, scar maturity, the definition of the sequelae and the achievement of the established objectives determine the end of the rehabilitation treatment. 
CONCLUSION: It is important to enhance the Rehabilitation Doctor figure in Burn Units. An early, multidisciplinary, holistic and individualized rehabilitation treatment minimizes sequelae in burned patients, helping to achieve their maximum possible functionality and social reintegration.

We will be pleased to welcome you in Turin (Italy) for the 19th European Burns Association´s Congress in 2022. Italy is honored to hold the meeting of the European Burns Association for the second time, after Verona in 1995. Turin is easily reachable from everywhere in Europe, either travelling by car, train or choosing flight connections. During the meeting, held in the renewed industrial center of the main Italian historical automotive factory (i.e. Lingotto-FIAT), we will meet international burn specialists, focusing on standards of care, progresses in burn treatment, strategies to face disaster situations, with a special attention to education of younger colleagues. However, in your spare time, you might enjoy the sweet days of Italian late summer, simply wandering in the green parks and gardens along the two rivers which cross the city, or you might decide to discover the numerous art galleries, churches, palaces, libraries, walking across elegant squares and large boulevards, passing through centuries of art and history; finally, you may choose to immerse yourself in some of the most exciting museum experiences, such as the Cinema Museum and the Turin’s Egyptian museum.
