Z-scheme heterojunction LiNbO3/g-C3N4, Type-II heterojunction LiNbO3/ZnS, and Bi2WO6 catalysts were successfully synthesized by hydrothermal method, calcination, and precipitation, respectively. Several limiting factors, such as lack of catalytic sites, insufficient light collection, and spatial charge separation capacity photocatalytic denitrification, still need to be overcome for the practical applications. An innovative Z-scheme heterojunction LiNbO3/g-C3N4 and Type-II heterojunction LiNbO3/ZnS with a unilateral open core-shell structure were constructed. The composite catalysts all achieved high nitrate removal and N2 selectivity. The excellent photocatalyst performance can be attributed to the improved surface active sites, well-matched band structures, and unique core-shell structure. Furthermore, the dependence of the performance of bismuth tungstate on the thickness of the catalyst nanosheets in the photocatalytic nitrate process was preliminarily investigated. The most suitable thickness of Bi2WO6 has stable self-environmental adaptability in a wide pH range (pH=3~9) to effectively reduce nitrate to nitrogen. The transition from high N2 selectivity to high NH3 selectivity can be achieved by modifying the surface sites of Bi2WO6 by some methods.
