Electron-poor dienes have the potential to serve as ideal substrates for the stereoselective synthesis of more complex molecules by catalyst-controlled nucleophile addition. The development of these reactions has been hindered by the difficulty in controlling both the positional selectivity of addition and the stereochemistry of the remaining alkene unit. This presentation will discuss reaction development, synthetic applications, and mechanistic aspects of stereoselective Rh-catalyzed nucleophile additions to electron-poor dienes. Ligand effects and the impact of diene geometry on site-selectivity will be discussed in the context of both reductive and multi-component reactions.
