Electrochemical CO2 activation has been of high importance in industrial decarbonization. Point sources of CO2, such as flue gas, have often contain many other environmental pollutants that can degrade change the interfacial properties and the resulting reactivity of these electrochemical materials. Of particular interest is SO2 which is present in trace amounts yet may exhibit a non negligible effects on surface properties due to the chemistry that often changes oxidic sites into sulfidic. This presentation will focus on elucidating changes in chemical composition of the nanoparticulate Cu2O in the presence of the simulated gas. Further, tailored SnO2 coated Cu2O nanoparticles will be interrogating using electrochemical techniques as they have been known to form a passivating layer in the presence of SO2. In addition, in situ surface sensitive measurements including near ambient pressure X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy will be used to assess the surface composition under moist conditions.
