Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have shown promise for each process in artificial photosynthetic chemistry, i.e., light harvesting, energy transfer, charge separation, electron/proton transport, and catalysis. Indeed, the Morris group has extensively studied MOFs for energy transfer, electron transport, and (photo)catalysis. In this talk, we will present key insights into the advantages of MOFs for artificial photosynthetic chemistry, e.g., long-range energy transfer (nm scale), rapid electron transport (supporting 100x the catalytic current of a monolayer of catalyst), and mechanistic oddities of photocatalysis. A highlight of the talk will be our recent work on the application of time-resolved spectroscopy (nanosecond transient absorption, femtosecond transient absorption, and nanosecond transient infrared spectroscopy) in characterizing the mechanisms of charge separation and catalysis within MOF architectures.
