Both poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) and microfluidic paper analytical devices (μPADs) offer undergraduate students the opportunity to work with low cost, user-friendly microfluidic devices. There are a number of reports recently that feature these devices in teaching labs, the majority of which involve colorimetric detection. This work involves the use of both PDMS and paper devices in simple colorimetric assays that encourage students to consider the effects of substrate, feature size, and choice of dye when performing and refining an experiment.
