<br/>We are developing a novel hybrid class of adsorbent for the rapid uptake of and high affinity for hazardous chemicals in contaminated air or water. These novel adsorbent materials are designed to offer several functional advantages, including targeted adsorption, high capacity, and reusability through a rapid thermal release, without sorbent degradation over previous generations of materials. This is accomplished by leveraging known metal organic frameworks (MOF) as a thermally stable scaffold for our custom sorbent moieties for capturing analytes via hydrogen bond formation. The thermal stability of the scaffold MOF will allow for reusability of the eventual application material as the captured analytes can be released by thermally cycling the material. The sorbent moieties are attached directly to the organic linker of the MOF scaffold and occupy a portion of the pores that are iconic of the MOF structure. Grafting the sorbents onto the MOF scaffold eliminates some self-binding between the current sorbent molecules which limits the adsorbing capacity. This self-binding broadens the OH stretch spectral peak and reduces the sensing ability of the sorbent material. With the MOF this self-binding should be eliminated and thus add a sensing capability for hydrogen binding events. These capabilities are compared with the native sorbents’ properties and those of the native MOFs which have been reported to have their own sorbent properties.
