Tris[(1-isopropylbenzimidazol-2-yl)dimethylsilyl]methane, [Tismi-PrBenz]H, has been employed to afford terminal hydride compounds of the main group metals, such as magnesium, zinc and cadmium. Interestingly, while the magnesium complex [Tismi-PrBenz]MgH features a metallacarbatrane motif with k4-N3C coordination, the zinc and cadmium compounds, [k3-Tismi-PrBenz]ZnH and [k3-Tismi-PrBenz]CdH, exhibit only k3-N2C coordination. The coordination mode adopted by the [Tismi-PrBenz] ligand is not only a function of the metal, but also depends on the nature of additional substituent, as illustrated by the fact that the cadmium methyl complex [Tismi-PrBenz]CdMe adopts an atrane motif. The similar structures of [k3-Tismi-PrBenz]ZnH and [k3-Tismi-PrBenz]CdH provide a means to compare the reactivity of Zn–H and Cd–H bonds in a common coordination environment.
