The electrochemical oxidative upgrading of biomass like Glycerol or 5-Hydroxy Methyl Furfural (HMF) to valuable products becomes more and more a green and sustainable alternative to today’s established chemical production processes due to a rising renewable energy sector. In addition, replacing the oxygen evolution reaction, overcoming its sluggish kinetics and consequently lowering the overall cell potential for water electrolyzer hydrogen production offers a huge opportunity for clean energy production in the future.<br/>Here we present advances in different biomass oxidation reactions over the oxygen evolution reaction and give a deeper look into state-of-the-art HMF-utilizing electrolyzers. In detail, we show the difference between HMF oxidation and OER in terms of catalytic and mechanistic features. Furthermore, we give an outlook on the industrial relevance of biomass oxidation in electrolyzers using 5-HMF oxidation as an example.
