The 6-arylpicolinates, also known as 6-APs, are an important class of herbicides with activity against a variety of broadleaf, sedge, and grass weeds. Research efforts in this area led to the discovery of Arylex<sup>TM</sup> active and Rinskor<sup>TM</sup> active, which are used in the cereals, rice, corn, and pastures and land management markets, among others. The extent and nature of substitution on the 6-aryl group, typically referred to as the aryl tail, has a profound effect on herbicidal activity. In particular, 3,4-disubstitution was found to be favorable for the expression of potent herbicidal activity. A broad survey of functional groups was subsequently undertaken in order to identify favorable substituents at both the 3-position and the 4-position. The synthesis and biological activity of relevant molecules will be discussed.
