It has been very difficult to derive alternatives for petroleum-based raw materials to produce epoxy-based thermoset resins. So, to tackle this a novel castor oil-based epoxy resin was synthesized, which offered a fast curing reaction with several hardeners and gave out excellent thermal and chemical stability which made it the best alternative for applications in coatings and adhesives. On the successful synthesis of the epoxide resin, it was combined with polyetheramine and polyamineamide, which offered a spectrum of thermal and mechanical properties identical to the commercial epoxy-based thermoset resins such as diglycidyl ether (DGEBA) a classical petro synthesized epoxide resin. The formulation of the resin with the commercial curing agent (Jeffamine) was found to be the best. Knowing the fact that castor oil-based epoxy has a high molecular weight, it was still possible to create a coating out of it without the need for volatile organic compounds (VOCs) or any other solvents which could be irritants or hazardous, which attested that it was a solvent-free formulation and successful replacement to the commercial resins up to some extent.
