New Ru(II) complexes will be discussed with absorption maxima in the red/near-infrared (near-IR) spectral region. A tridentate ligand derived from terpyridine affords lower energy metal-to-ligand charge transfer (MLCT) absorption. Importantly, these complexes are able to undergo photoinduced ligand dissociation directly from the triplet MLCT state, such that near-IR irradiation results in ligand exchange with solvent. In addition, ancillary ligands with low-energy, long-lived ligand-centered (LC) triplet states are also able to generate singlet oxygen.  These dual-activity complexes are more active towards cancer cells as compared to those that only undergo drug release or singlet oxygen production. Results with a number of cancer cells and 3D tumor models will be presented.
