Copper(II) pyridyl-based ligands with triflate counterions were utilized in modified Chan-Evans-Lam cross-coupling through N-arylation of multifarious N-nucleophiles and aryl boronic acids. The methodology employed catalytic Cu2+ complex, inorganic/organic base in an environmentally favorable solvent at ambient temperature using atmospheric oxygen as an oxidant. Solvent and base-controlled chemoselective cross-coupling reactions were observed, which led to the chemodivergent synthesis of a C–N coupled sulfanilamides. The complexes and pyridine-based hemilabile ligands were characterized and their structures were investigated through 1H and 13C-NMR, HRMS, FTIR, UV-Vis spectroscopies, single-crystal X-ray diffraction, and cyclic voltammetry. N-arylated products were screened against S. pneumoniae as potential new starting structures for antimicrobial design.
