Objectives:
In 2018, the Centre for Children with Hearing Impairment as part of the NICD was established, which
is also an implantology centre.
Methods: Retrospective analysis.
Results: The authors analyse a cohort of 63 paediatric patients who underwent unilateral (13
children) or bilateral (44 children) cochlear implantation between 2018 and 2022. There were 42
boys and 21 girls in the cohort, the youngest child was 14 months old at the time of surgery, the
oldest 9 years and 7 months. Complications were rare in the study group, they occurred pre- or
postoperatively. Preoperatively, electrode kinking occurred twice requiring us to reimplant the
patient, then development of rhinoliquorrhea (1x) forced us to reoperate the patient due to massive
discharge of liquor from the operated ear and we had also an insufficient insertion of the electrodes
into the cochlea (2x). Postoperatively, we dealt with a retroauricular abscess at the site of processor
placement (2x), which led to the need for CI removal and subsequent reimplantation, and once we
faced the complications of acute otitis media (acute mastoiditis and spread of inflammation
intracerebrally to the temporal lobe on the right), the condition was managed with an ENT and
neurosurgery revision. Of the 101 ears operated, complications occurred in 7 cases, i.e. 7%.
Conclusion: All of complications were successfully resolved and the patients can continue to use the
implants.
