Objectives: Literature indicates alterations in vestibular function resulting from cochlear implantation (CI) in all age groups. The extent of these alterations vary between the studies. Vestibular function should be monitored, especially in candidates for bilateral implantation. The aim of this study was to assess the impact of CI surgery on vestibular function and posture in children with hearing loss who underwent unilateral CI surgery.  
Methods: Children after unilateral CI surgery were qualified for this study. Videonystagmography using the rotation chair test and caloric test was performed for children over 4 y.o; for younger children the caloric tests were omitted.  
Results: 9 patients were recruited for this study (age 3-12) years, the average time from CI surgery was 1.5 years prior. None of the patients reported dizziness, vertigo or imbalance. One patient was disqualified from the study due to lack of compliance. In 5 patients slight canal paresis was observed on the implanted side, no spontaneous nystagmus or directional preponderance was found.
Conclusions: Cochlear implantation may result in vestibular hypofunction, this should be taken into consideration before qualification for bilateral CI surgery.
