Abstract

Background and Aims: Iron deficiency anemia is the most widespread nutritional disorder in pediatric age group. Lactoferrin is emerging as an important regulator of systemic iron homeostasis, it regulates the absorption of iron in the intestine with significantly fewer gastrointestinal side effects. Aim of the work is to compare efficacy and compliance to iron formulations: Iron polymaltose alone and lactoferrin with ferrous gluconate as a combination in the treatment of iron deficiency anemia in children aged 2-6 years. Methods: This randomized controlled study was conducted on 100 children aged 2- 6 years old with iron deficiency anemia attended Alexandria University Children’s Hospital to assess the efficacy of different iron formulations ; where 50 children (group 1) were given iron polymaltose complex and the other 50 children (group 2) were given lactoferrin with ferrous gluconate. Hemoglobin, serum iron, serum ferritin were assessed before and after six weeks of treatment. Results: The study showed that there was a statistically significant difference concerning the rise in Hb% ( P=0.000), serum iron (P=0.000) and serum ferritin (P=0.000) between iron polymaltose group and lactoferrin with ferrous gluconate group where the rise in their levels was more in the second group, with less side effects Conclusions: 1.Lactoferrin with ferrous gluconate is superior over iron polymaltose complex in treatment of iron deficiency anemia where rise in hemoglobin was considered. 2.Lactoferrin has less side effects and more compliance. 3.Iron polymaltose cause more GIT upset including nausea and constipation.
