The compound [Mn4(tBuN)7(NMnO3)] (2) is obtained by reacting [Mn5Li3(μ6-N)(N)(μ3-NtBu)6(μ-NtBu)3(NtBu)] (1) with wet 12-crown-4. Compound 2 further reacts with cyclooctene resulting in the compound [Mn4(tBuN)7(NH)] (3) along with alcohol- and ketone-based oxygen-containing products. The structural topology of 2 and its reactivity slightly analogous to the reaction mechanism to the proposed S4 state in the OEC of PS II. One frequently cited proposal is the nucleophilic attack by water hydroxide on a pendant Mn=O moiety, though no chemical example of this reactivity at a manganese cubane cluster has been reported. We describe here the preparation, characterization, and reactivity of compound 2 toward modeling complexes of OEC in PS II. Residual gas analysis (RGA) for oxygen evolution is also detected and water oxidation experiments are in progress.
