Tellurite glasses have long been of interest to researchers due to their thermal, electrical, and optical properties. Previously, silicate, phosphate, and germanate glasses sensitized with rare-earth ions have been used to create permanent and transient laser-induced gratings. Examples of devices based on laser-induced gratings include holographic storage devices and holographic narrow-band-rejection filters (notch filters) that can be used as channel selectors for wavelength-multiplexed optical fiber systems. The goal of this research project is to prepare a series of optical quality transparent tellurite glasses doped with varying mole percentages of Eu2O3 to study how the amount of doping affects the quality of the gratings. TeO2-ZnO-Na2O glasses doped with Eu2O3 were prepared using the melt and quench technique, where the glass components were mixed and ground together in an inert atmosphere, melted at a high temperature (900 °C) for several hours and then quenched and annealed at a lower temperature (270 °C) for several hours. The compositions of these glass materials are 20% ZnO, 10% Na2O, and 70-x% TeO2, (x = 0, 1, 2, 4, and 6 where x is the mole percent of Eu2O3). Synthetic challenges, solutions to these challenges, and characterization of the glass samples by PXRD and optical techniques will be presented.
