Students studying organic chemistry need a firm foundation in many general chemistry concepts. The retention and transfer of content and problem-solving skills from general chemistry to organic chemistry are necessary for this firm foundation. Previously, we have developed a mastery-based tool that is administered in the second semester of organic chemistry to measure retention of content and skills from the first to second semester of organic chemistry.  Current studies are aimed towards refining the second semester mastery-based tool, as well as administering an additional mastery-based learning instrument that can be used throughout the first semester to reinforce important general chemistry concepts and skills.  Preparing for these mastery quizzes encourages students to revisit the concepts and content knowledge in which they need improvement.  This also allows for conversations with faculty about directed review. Resulting data collected from our study and lessons learned from the experience are reported.
