Desktop filament 3D Printers (a.k.a. FDM or FFF) have the largest number of installations among available additive manufacturing processes. PLA and ABS are the most common filament materials in the market. Polypropylene or polyolefin in general being a class of widely used thermoplastics is of great interest to additive manufacturing users in applications such as rapid prototyping, customized manufacturing, digital design of functional composites and meta-materials [1] and etc. In this work, we conducted tensile tests on 3D printed layered specimen in the z-direction similarly as Coogan and et al did [2]. We compared polyolefin filaments made of polypropylene and its composites, copolymer and terpolymer consist of propylene, ethylene, and butene monomers. We carried out chemical, thermal and mechanical investigations of the specimen produced by the additive process of micro filament melt. Within the parameter space of temperatures and strain rates of our study, we were able to observe a brittal to ductile transitions for some specimen and not for others. We think the key factors include amorphous content and the interlayer strength by interfacial diffusion, of which Wool and et al [2] has proposed a repation model for interfacial self healing. Reology study also indicates a correlation between viscosity and interlayer tensile strength.
