MoNi4 is an intermetallic compound used to replace platinum as the cathode in the Hydrogen Evolution Reaction (HER). MoNi4 is an inexpensive and effective alternative to platinum for electrocatalysts in the HER. In this project, WNi4 will be synthesized and characterized as a variant to the MoNi4 cathode for the HER. For this project, WNi4 will be synthesized following a procedure like that for synthesizing MoNi4. Scanning electron microscopy and x-ray diffraction will be used to characterize the product. WNi4 will then be used as the cathode for HER and its efficiency as an electrocatalyst will be evaluated.
