A (furanylmethylene)oxindole-based homopolymer along with a (thienylmethylene)oxindole-based homopolymer—PolyFEI-ODD and PolyTEIA, respectively—have been successfully synthesized under DArP conditions. PolyFEI-ODD and PolyTEIA were explored as candidates for use in organic polymer solar cells (OPSCs). With PolyTEIA’s nonstainable, thiophene-based derivative, a greener and more sustainable, furan-based derivative was explored and synthesized. Hexanes-soluble PolyFEI-ODD and PolyTEIA were analyzed through gel permeation chromatography (GPC), cyclic voltammetry (CV), and thin-film UV-vis spectroscopy. Weight-average molecular weights of PolyFEI-ODD and PolyTEIA were observed at 13,000 and 48,000 g/mol, respectively; band gaps of PolyFEI-ODD and PolyTEIA were 2.63 eV and 2.13 eV, respectively, both of which were higher than previously reported literature values of related oxindole-based polymers. These preliminary results are directly related to the stereoselectivity of PolyFEI-ODD and PolyTEIA.
