This year the ACS student chapter at Ouachita Baptist University is working hard to share chemistry with others on campus and in our local community. During the summer, our chapter performed demonstrations at Arkansas Children’s Hospital to teach children about science as well as to brighten the day of the patients. As a chapter, we continued a mentorship program which pairs upperclassmen science majors with underclassmen science majors in order to help lead the younger students towards success. The Friday before National Chemistry Week, we introduced the concept of NCW to students on campus by performing demos in the student center at lunch time. Then during National Chemistry Week, we helped others experience the joy of chemistry by holding demonstrations two different times in a central part of campus and by watching the NCW ACS Program in a Box with another student chapter. During this week, we continued the fun by celebrating Mole Day by having guacamole for the students in the student center and having a “mole hunt” for students to win prizes! Following the festivities of National Chemistry Week, our students volunteered at a local section event in Little Rock where we exposed young kids to STEM by involving them in experiments and demonstrations. In an effort to improve our presence on campus, we joined with another ACS student chapter at a local university to host a tailgate at a football game and planned for a booth at the homecoming festival. We also hosted a Christmas party for students and held a chapter movie night. This led to growth, willingness, and desire to participate in our chapter events. To inform students on postgraduate options, we brought in two speakers to speak about their graduate programs and we hosted a resume workshop for applying to summer research programs and graduate/professional schools. Another long-term goal for our chapter is to become a green chapter. Towards this, we plan to visit a solar energy farm in Camden, Arkansas. Another way that we incorporated solar energy into our chapter’s community involvement is by helping the local Girl Scouts chapter build solar cells for them to earn a STEM badge. As a chapter, we made an effort to reach not only other students at our university, but the community as a whole. Our chapter experienced a lot of growth this year and we expect it to only keep getting better from here!
