Propolis, a natural resinous substance collected by honeybees from buds and exudates of plants, is used in beehives for reinforcement and protection. Also known to be a natural medicine, propolis exhibits beneficial properties such as antibacterial, anti-oxidative, antiviral, and antimicrobial activity. The chemical composition of different propolis are dependent on multiple factors such as the area of collection the season, bee species, and vegetation available to the bees. In this study, the antioxidant activity of several propolis samples obtained from 9 European countries (England, Greece, Portugal, Russia, Latvia, Serbia, Hungary, Bulgaria, and Lithuania) were determined using the DPPH and ABTS assay. The antioxidant activity was correlated to the phenol content obtained using Folin-Ciocalteu assay and flavonoid content using aluminum chloride colorimetric assay. Based on the results, all samples exhibited antioxidant activities of varying degrees with samples from Lithuania and Serbia having the highest antioxidant activity. The antioxidant activity was also related to the phenol content but not the flavonoid content of the propolis samples.
