The hydration of nitriles offers a mechanism in which amides are produced in an atom economical fashion, challenging current methods. The emergence of nanoparticle catalysts has expanded the methods to synthesize molecules. In particular, silver nanoparticles offer a more efficient means of amide synthesis. The difficulty, however, lies with the selection of ligands for specific characteristics. Previous research in the hydration of nitriles to amides using silver nanoparticle catalysts has been conducted using various ligands. However, a lack of systematic cataloging concerning the effects of various ligand properties on the efficacy of nanoparticle catalysts leaves much undiscovered. By considering properties, like electron-withdrawing capabilities or steric bulk, adjustments can be made to produce a more effective, yet stable nanoparticle catalyst, capable of efficient nitrile hydration.<br/>       The goal of this study is to examine the effects of different ligands on silver nanoparticles as nitrile hydration catalysts. By employing electron-withdrawing/donating and steric bulk properties of various ligands, observations can be made to develop an optimal catalyst which readily facilitates the synthesis of amides in a way that is both efficient and economical. Previous research has suggested that the use of electron-withdrawing ligands improves the effectiveness of silver nanoparticle catalysts. In the current study, a selection of benzoic acid and thiophenol derivatives were used to observe the influence of ligand properties on silver nanoparticle catalyst efficacy for the hydration of nitriles.<br/>
