Western Washington University’s Student Chapter has established a program that strives to: 1) create an engaging and welcoming learning environment for students, staff, and faculty, 2) serve as an information resource for students to supplement their educational experience, and 3) serve as ambassadors for chemistry to the broader community by offering meaningful service and outreach opportunities. The Chapter has developed an effective outreach program using educational science demonstration shows. It organizes and presents numerous shows at schools and for other groups in the community. Using a process that emphasizes communication, safety, and assessment, the Chapter continues to improve its outreach program. These activities build a cohesive group while addressing some of the educational needs in the local community. The Chapter’s efforts also present science and chemistry in a positive perspective. In 2019, the Chapter received external grant support to increase its outreach activities to local middle schools and to create a Whatcom County Science Night for the community. Creating and establishing this new outreach program is a major Chapter focus for the 2019-20 academic year.
