The uranyl cation has previously demonstrated photocatalytic activity with organic substrates to form peroxide complexes. This reaction has been demonstrated in the presence of simple organic molecules in solution, but this transformation has not been described in the solid state. This study investigated the photochemical reaction that occurred in the solid-state crystals of U(VI) and 18-crown-6 crown ethers in the presence of ethanol. In order to study the effects of the photochemical reaction, single crystals were synthesized using slow evaporation techniques in order to promote crystal growth. After exposure to light, the crystals underwent a chemical transformation which changed the composition of the crystals. Characterization of differences in these structures using single crystal X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy provided an explanation on how the photochemical reaction changed the composition of the crystals.
