Although community and other open enrollment colleges play a crucial role in STEM education and workforce development, existing research provides a limited understanding of community college STEM students. Building Opportunities for STEM Success (BOSS) is an externally funded multidisciplinary research project at Florida State College Jacksonville that addresses this research gap through an evidence-generating project designed to evaluate the impact of strategically embedding key study skills into six cross-sector STEM courses: Introduction to General Chemistry, College Algebra, Earth & Space Science, Life in its Biological Environment, Hardware Configuration (IT) and Introduction to Engineering. We are interested in determining if student performance and efficacy can be increased by teaching STEM-specific study skills as co-curricular content in STEM courses. Led by a passionate group of interdisciplinary STEM faculty members, BOSS has created series of 10 short study skills videos and incorporated these tutorials inside their STEM courses to determine if study strategies for STEM students can be improved. Some of study strategies include Distributed Practice, Interleaved Practice, Attention Techniques, Diffused Thinking and Notetaking. The study strategies are being implemented in both face to face and online courses. Data collection, including content knowledge and student efficacy measures, is currently underway. This presentation will discuss the experimental rational, design, data collection and share some preliminary results. Additionally, a short discussion will address some of the challenges of performing externally funded research in an associate’s degree transfer program.
