There is a need for efficient, sustainable, and more environmentally friendly methods of synthesis. Solvent use is a prime issue when trying to make more environmentally friendly and less hazardous reaction procedures. Mechanochemistry is a potential method for greener chemical synthesis. Since lanthanides bond through primarily electrostatic means, their coordination number and geometry are determined by the ligands rather than the metal ion. For this reason, lanthanides are ideal to test for mechanochemical reactions as there is potential for altering stoichiometry and the solid-state structure through mechanochemical conditions. In order to determine the scope of the mechanochemical reactions for lanthanides a study was conducted to determine the feasibility of solid-state reactions for the formation of ternary complexes of lanthanide beta-diketonates. We used mechanochemistry to afford lanthanide coordination complexes of the form Ln(beta-diketonate)3X (where X = H<sub>2</sub>O, 1,2-dimethoxyethane, 2,2-bipyridine and 4-phenyl-2,2′6,2-terpyridine). Reaction products were characterized using FTIR, melting points, and UV-Vis spectroscopy. Characterization of the reaction products has led to increased knowledge of the scope of mechanochemical synthesis for lanthanide coordination reactions.
