Porous Si powder is formed by ReEtching (short for regenerative electroless etching) of Si microparticles, which are visibly photoluminescent because of their quantum confined sub-5-nm-thick pore walls. Thermal hydrosilylation of ReEtched particles facilitates their chemical passivation with a functionalized organic solvent and yields capped photoluminescent Si microparticles from which nanoparticles can be generated by grinding or laser ablation. Laser ablation is performed by the irradiation of a powder dispersed in a liquid by a high powered nanosecond-pulsed Nd<sup>3+</sup>:YAG laser operating at 355 nm. Laser ablation simultaneously mills the porous microparticles into nanoparticles and creates reactive species that cause reaction between the solvent in which the particles are suspended and the Si surface. The process of suspending silicon nanoparticles in an organic solvent with terminal leaving groups and laser irradiating them may facilitate the formation of particularly stable Si-C bonds. The structures of passivated Si nanoparticles produced by hydrosilylation and laser ablation are characterized through Fourier-Transform Infrared (FT-IR) and Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) Spectroscopy. Physical characteristics of the nanoparticles are analyzed with data from Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), and photoluminescent data is presented.
