Metal-ligand binding depends on the structure and reactivities of the ligands. A new series of phenanthroline ligand analogs caused considerable distortions at the metal center and opened a promising avenue to study metal ligand interactions. The goal of this work is to examine the properties of various dipyridyl ligands that are derived from 1,10-phenanthroline that has a flat and planar structure. We synthesized these analogs using 1,10 phenanthroline and potassium permanganate in an aqueous basic environment. After five hours of reaction, we filtered and dried the reaction product and characterized it using FTIR and 1H-NMR. So far, a methyl, ethyl and an isopropyl ester functional groups are added to the dipyridyl ligands in order to alter the planarity of the molecule. The distortions in the conformations are going to be systematically assessed by X-ray crystallography. Conformational changes will be determined as a function of ligand structure. Given that the chemistry of Co2+ complexes is well established, we intend to investigate solvation equilibria using UV-Visible spectrophotometry to indicate perhaps the presence of a four or six membered coordinate structure via systematic variations using solvents that would either coordinate or non-coordinate.
