Molten salt reactors (MSRs) utilizing a salt as both fuel and coolant present a complex challenge in understanding and controlling key salt thermochemical and thermophysical properties. While the fuel salt can be a relatively simple mixture of two to three fluoride or chloride salts, any extended period of operation will result in compositional changes due to a myriad of generated fission products as well as contaminants such as oxygen and corrosion products. A tool for understanding the behavior of the fuel in real time is its computed equilibrium state. This requires a set of Gibbs energy models for such multicomponent systems, the need for which is being addressed in the development of the Molten Salt Thermochemical Database (MSTDB). This presentation will cover the development and status of the MSTDB and considerations of its use in reactor modeling and simulation via the thermochemical solver THERMOCHIMICA being implemented in prospective MSR codes.
