Commercialization of new chemistries is needed more today than ever and yet is more complex than ever before. The gauntlet of governmental regulations, the challenges of defining actual customer/market needs and the demand for rapid scale-up of new chemistries are just some of the challenges encountered today.<br/>This presentation outlines the challenges of bringing new technologies, such as flame-retardant additives and polymers to market, and offers several approaches to minimize risk and shorten the time to market. Utilizing the experience of a largely untapped workforce, namely the recently retired generation of industrial technologists as consultants is proposed. These highly technical personnel have proven experience in defining market needs with customers and in outlining steps to ensure that the commercialized project has a market pull meeting customers’ needs. Many of these same consultants have industrial experience in technical tools such as high throughput screening, molecular modeling, design of experiments/analytics and global sourcing to help identify cost effective candidates. In addition to their direct know-how, they understand the resources that can be leveraged to enhance the technology’s time to market. Many have demonstrated experience with flexible manufacturing processes such as reactive extrusion to carry out various chemical reactions in polymer extruders to synthesize value-added oligomers and polymers. Examples of the actual use of many of these valuable tools and approaches will be given.
