Although catch basin inserts have been used widely as sediment traps near construction sites, they have not received a lot of attention as potential pre-treatment before introducing polluted stormwater into various green stormwater infrastructure (GSI).  Urbanization has not only increased the volume of the runoff water entering the sewer system but also elevated pollutant concentration levels in the runoff water. Catch basin inserts are runoff-filters designed to be installed under individual sewer grates with the goal of filtering particles and dissolved pollutants (e.g., nutrients and metals) from stormwater before entering a sewer system. Catch basin inserts generally consist of a sediment trap to remove particles, followed by various sorption media filters designed for various pollutants. Although catch basin inserts have been used widely as sediment traps near construction sites, they have not received a lot of attention as potential pre-treatment before introducing polluted stormwater into various green stormwater infrastructure (GSI). In this study, we have tested the ability of the Fe and MnO<sub>2</sub> coated polypropylene fabrics as sorption media material to remove various stormwater contaminants including phosphorus and copper. Runoff water samples were collected and analysed to understand the concentrations of pollutants in urban runoff water. Synthetic pollutant solutions were then prepared in the laboratory and batch experiments were conducted to evaluate the sorption kinetics. Different amounts of sorption media material was added to 50 ml centrifuge tubes with a 550 ppm phosphorus solution and concentration measurements were taken over time. pH of the solution was also monitored. Freundlich and Langmuir isotherms models were tested to better understand the sorption mechanism. Batch experiments were also conducted at different temperatures to understand the effect of the temperature on the sorption process and to allow for thermodynamic modelling.
