Abstract

Omniscienzs TM feedback device improves training in BLS in a young athletes population. Introduction Cardiac arrest in sports is not a rare phenomenon. Recent studies show an incidence of 2.3 per 100,000 in athletes as compared to 0.9 per 100,000 in non-athletes. A recent study in France reports an incidence of 4.6 per million population per year; arriving to 6 % of those, in competitive athletes. As bystanders are crucial to get the best rates of survival after cardiac arrest, training athletes in BLS could impact in the overall survival. Objectives Our objective is to assess the efficacy of our wearable CPR feedback device in a junior football team which has been previously trained in BLS. Material and methods. We had the opportunity to study the performance of our wearable device in a licensed junior football team, consisting of 23 members, and everyone equipped with our wearable device to perform cardiac massage in a manikin equipped with a potentiometer to measure real time chest depth compressions and real time compression rate. In our study we compare the results of those massages performed with and without feedback while we measure all data with our wearable feedback device to assess the accuracy of our mathematical model. Results The age of the football players was 16.6 (15.2-17.3) years old. All of them improved their performance. Results were significative 46.71+-14.82 mm and 111.34+-25.61 bpm vs 55.89+-7.13 mm and 113.12+-8.26 bpm. (p<0.038 for depth and p<0.652 for rate). The accuracy was excellent showing RSME of 3.98 mm for all depth measurements with a Pearson Correlation of 0.94 (p<0.0001) and an intraclass correlation of 0.93 (p<0.0001). Conclusions Omniscienzs feedback device can be useful in training BLS in young athletes.
