Abstract

Background: Stigma associated with mental illness is common and is also the main obstacle of mental health care. In 2017, Taiwanese Society of Psychiatry started an anti-stigma program for schizophrenia. Methods: We present the results of action group, anti-stigma activities, and the survey of knowledge and attitudes about stigma to schizophrenia. Results: The action group was held to design the anti-stigma program and its implementations. Several anti-stigma activities were taken place in different psychiatric hospitals in northern, middle, and southern Taiwan. On-line survey of stigma to schizophrenia was done to the patients with schizophrenia, the publics, and medical students. Finally, a press conference was held to present the results of the surveys of knowledge and attitudes to schizophrenia, to emphasize the importance of correcting the common myths and discriminations to the schizophrenia. Conclusion: More actions should be taken in the anti-stigma program for schizophrenia, to establish the friendly community and reduce the prejudice of the publics and the suffering of people with mental illness.
