Abstract

Background Emergency care worldwide is affected by events such as terror, disasters and violence. Technical development and changes in society also creates a need for new knowledge. The challenge lies in making professionals with different requirements and preferences work together as a team. Trauma care requires a clearly defined organization in order to meet severely injured patients. The number of penetrating trauma cases is constantly increasing. Aim The aim of the present study was to investigate important factors for Operating Room Nurse (ORN)- and Anesthetist Nurse (AN), while working with patients who have suffered from traumatic cardiac arrest, according to a nursing - and patients safety perspective. Methods A qualitative method was used in this study. The data collection was maid by individual interviews, with 18 ORN or AN. Data were transcribed verbatim for qualitative content analysis. Results Competencies and areas that were considered important for patients regarding traumatic cardiac arrest were identified. These competencies and areas resulted in six main categories: team, policies and procedures, training and acquisition of knowledge, leadership, flexibility and communication. Conclusions All members of the trauma team have their specific role with their professional skills and function. These vocational professions are necessary for patient safety. Several key factors that are important for patient safety were identified through the interviews with both operating room and anesthetist nurses. This study also shows that leadership in trauma care should be given a distinct position to increase patient safety.
