Bis(phosphino)ferrocene ligands are commercially available ligands that are commonly used in a variety of catalytic applications. We have recently examined the catalytic activity of [Au2Cl2(μ-PP)] compounds where the PP ligands are dppf (1,1′-bis(diphenylphosphino)ferrocene), dippf (1,1′-bis(diiso-propylphosphino)ferrocene), dcpf (1,1′-bis(dicyclohexylphosphino)ferrocene), dtbpf (1,1′-bis(ditert-butylphosphino)ferrocene), dppdtbpf ((1-diphenylphosphino-1′-ditert-butylphosphino)ferrocene)) and dfurpf (1,1′-bis(di(5-methyl)2-furanylphosphino)ferrocene. These compounds were found to be poor catalysts in a vareity of hyrdroamination and ring-closing reactions. Upon addition of Na[BArF24] (BArF24 = tetrakis(3,5-bis(trifluoromethyl)phenyl)borate) a chloride ligand is lost to give [Au2(μ-Cl)(μ-PP)][BArF24]. These cationic gold complexes are much more efficient catalyts in the same reactions.
