Background
Diabetes is considered an endemic medical condition with increasing prevalence globally. This tendency has been also detected in Hungary, where the prevalence of diabetes among the adult population reached 7% according to the latest data. Hungary has a leading place in global statistics of oral cancer and there is a high incidence of type-2 diabetes. Because statistically every 11th patient has diabetes in the dental office, dentists should be prepared for the special care of people living with diabetes (PwD). There was established a special oral care unit for PwD in the Semmelweis University Faculty of Dentistry in 2016. This oral care unit has a special interest in scientific research - PhD project about oral health and diabetes -, patient care and also educational collaborations.

Aim
Our aim was to create an educational lecture about oral health and oral care management for the Hungarian general dentists. The lecture contained informations about diabetes in general, the most common oral health complications for PwD and the basic equipments and diabetes treatment options.

Method
The presenter of the educational lecture was also a dentist, who has type-1 diabetes. The lecture was selected as a core element of the Hungarian Medical Chamber Dental Faculty's (HMCDF) postgraduate series, and visited 4 Hungarian cities - Budapest, Miskolc, Győr, Szekszárd - in 2016. HMCDF and the Hungarian Diabetes Association (HDA) reviewed and validated the lecture and the informations before it was presented.

Results
There are approximately 7100 dentists in Hungary, and around 5000 of them are active. In 2016 more than 2000 Hungarian dentists (40%) was able to participate in the educational lecture, which was specialized for dental emergencies and basic knowledge about the oral care management of PwD. The participant dentists made advocacy activity by lifting up blue papers - blue symbolized diabetes -  for the support of the World Diabetes Day 2016. 

Discussion
40% of the active dentists in Hungary participated in the special lecture about oral health and diabetes. We would like to continue this initiative in Hungary, as well as internationally. In 2017 we are going to continue our successful educational project with the help of the IDF's Young Leaders in Diabetes Program!
