Abstract

DOES OFFERING DELIVERY ROOM CUDDLES TO MOTHERS OF NEWBORN EXTREMELY PRETERM INFANTS AFFECT NEONATAL ADMISSION TEMPERATURES? Background and Aim: Parents of extremely preterm babies are very rarely allowed a delivery-room cuddle of their newborns because urgent NICU admission is considered highest priority. This study assessed the thermal safety of allowing mothers a brief delivery-room cuddle prior to NICU admission. Methods: Retrospective review and case control study of delivery-room and neonatal records of babies inborn at ≤26 weeks’ gestation and admitted to our tertiary centre in the 12-year period 2006-2017. Babies whose mothers had been allowed to hold and cuddle them in the delivery room were identified and each matched for birth gestation, gender, delivery mode, and multiplicity with contemporaneous control babies whose mothers had been only ‘shown’ them before NICU admission. Results: Of 396 babies admitted at <27 weeks’ gestation in the study period, 233 were inborn and, following initial resuscitation including intubation, 27 (12%) of gestation 22+5–26+5 weeks received a delivery-room cuddle with their mothers prior to NICU admission. The Table shows median (range) NICU admission times and temperatures in cuddled versus control babies. Conclusion: Mothers of extremely preterm infants immensely value being offered a delivery-room cuddle before baby’s NICU admission. The practice does not significantly delay NICU admission or adversely affect admission temperatures.
