Abstract

Background The Ottawa Hospital successfully implemented an appropriately staffed, dedicated stroke unit in November 2016 complying with Ontario Stroke Network definition and included stroke admission orders consulting all disciplines. Historically, Speech Language Pathology (SLP) resources were limited and systematic approach to SLP consults was lacking. As a result, stroke patients may not have been assessed by SLP prior to their discharge from their acute stay. The creation of an acute stroke pathway for SLP helped ensure that all stroke patients were assessed for dysphagia and communication in a timely fashion in order to provide post-acute recommendations. Methods SLPs working on Stroke Unit developed an acute stroke pathway using Canadian Stroke Best Practice Recommendations (CSBPR) as a guide, to ensure all stroke patients received necessary assessments within 48 hours of their admission and make recommendations for post-acute care within the recommended 72 hours. Results The acute stroke pathway for SLP allowed for a standardized approach to assessing all modalities in stroke patients in a timely fashion. This helped ensure that patients requiring SLP services post-acute stay were appropriately referred. The figure below shows the pathway for both ischemic (red) and hemorrhagic (blue) strokes. Conclusions/Implications Implementation of an acute stroke pathway for SLP provided a framework to ensure all stroke patients were assessed in a timely fashion in keeping with CSBPRs.
