A facile and scalable process has been demonstrated to create thin films for organic photovoltaics and sensor applications. This project incorporates material science and organic chemistry to create a complex structure that leverages the conductive qualities of graphene oxide (GO) and the ability of photoreaction centers to emit electrons from excitation with photons. An electrostatic layer-by-layer assembly is used to develop 3D GO/photoreaction center thin film nanocomposites. The graphene oxide is functionalized and chemically activated with 1-Ethyl-3-(3-dimethylaminopropyl) carbodiimide (EDC) to crosslink with bacterial photoreaction center proteins to provide a structure that is capable of directionally converting photons to generate charge carriers and dispersing it throughout a 2D network of graphene oxide thus ultimately enhancing charge recombination. The photoreaction centers absorb near infrared photons in addition to visible spectrum and enhance biomaterial-based light harvesting thin film devices that will result in higher photocurrent generation.
